LA Police Chief William Bratton said yesterday that up to 60 members of an elite LAPD squad that stormed into a park last Tuesday and fired upon peaceful demonstrators, have been taken off the streets. Last Tuesday’s permitted May Day march and rally in MacArthur Park organized by MIWON (Multi-Ethnic Immigration Organizing Network) degenerated into a violent police crackdown on demonstrators and media. Police swung batons and shot rubber bullets, foam bullets and tear gas into the crowd of mostly families. Video footage showed Fox 11’s Christina Gonzalez and her camera-person being pushed by police. Bratton added yesterday, “I’m not going to defend the indefensible… things were done that shouldn’t have been done.” LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has returned to the city, cutting short a trip to Mexico to deal with the growing scandal. Yesterday he attended a special Mass of consolation and healing for those affected by the crackdown at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Church. He promised “consequences for the abuse.” Chief Bratton has asked the FBI to launch an independent investigation. The newcomer police chief is near the end of the his first term, and his handling of this scandal may determine whether his term will be renewed. <\/p>\n There will be an event on May 17th at MacArthur Park at 5 pm organized by MIWON to encourage demonstrators to take back the streets.
