Zinn’s seminal work was groundbreaking insofar as it was an antidote to the American history that has been taught for so long in our public schools. Teachers and parents who have sought to bring Zinn’s social perspectives to young people have been at a loss for books until now. Rebecca Stefoff has adapted Zinn’s history book to create a two volume set for young adult readers ages 10-14 called “A Young People’s History of the United States.” “A Young People’s History,” is complete with full page illustrations, a glossary, and primary sources and is a valuable teaching tool. Volume one takes young readers through the days of Columbus to the Spanish-American War of 1898. Volume two covers the class struggles of the twentieth century and ends with the present so-called war on terror. In the introduction to the first volume of “A Young People’s History,” Zinn writes, “We should be able to tell the truth about people whom we have been taught to look upon as heroes, but who really don’t deserve that admiration.”

Uprising was among the first to interview Howard Zinn last week, about this two volume history book.

Interventions: A new Book by Noam Chomsky

Since 2002, the New York Times Syndicate has been distributing op-eds written by the pre-eminent foreign policy critic and scholar of our time, Noam Chomsky. The New York Times Syndicate is part of the same company as the New York Times newspaper, and while readers around the world have had a chance to regularly read Chomsky’s articles, the New York Times newspaper has never published a single one. Only a few regional newspapers in the US have picked up the Op-eds, such as the Register Guard, the Dayton Daily News, and the Knoxville Voice. Internationally, the Op-eds have appeared in the mainstream British press including the International Herald Tribune, the Guardian, and the Independent. Now, City Lights Books has just published a complete collection of these 1000 word Op-eds in a single book called Interventions.

Thank you Gifts

Interventions by Noam Chomsky – book – $70
South America Rising by Noam Chomsky – CD – $50
Young People’s History of the US by Howard Zinn – 2 book set – $165
Howard Zinn and Amy Goodman at Fanuiel Hall, Boston – DVD – $100
Best of Uprising Mp3 CD – $35
Uprising T-shirt – $60

Support KPFK – Make a pledge at 818-985-5735, or online at www.kpfk.org.
