Former U.S. President George W. Bush this week canceled a trip to Switzerland citing security concerns. The cancellation was in response to a preliminary indictment by the U.S.-based Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) in conjunction with a European group based in Berlin, the Center for Constitutional and Human Rights. The two organizations detail in a 42-page document their case that Bush had authorized torture of terrorism suspects while they were in U.S. custody. The indictment is based on criminal complaints brought by two people claiming to be victims of torture. Their complaints which were filed in Geneva, Switzerland, are supported by more than 2,500 pages of supporting evidence. Because Swiss law requires that the accused person has to be present on Swiss soil before opening a preliminary investigation, Bush’s (now canceled) trip for a February 12th speaking event had provided the perfect opportunity. CCR has promised that eventually Bush will travel to a country where he will be prosecuted for authorizing torture. Bush admitted to authorizing waterboarding suspects in his memoir Decision Points. Meanwhile, Bush’s former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who is about to release his own memoir called Known and Unknown, has warned that the prosecution attempts against Bush are mis-guided. Rumsfeld himself is the target of an ACLU lawsuit on behalf of former Iraqi and Afghan prisoners who were abused in prison. Like Bush, Rumsfeld enjoys immunity from such suits in the U.S. And, both Rumsfeld and Bush remain defiantly confident that they made the right decisions. <\/p>\n
