Yet Compton’s mayor and city council is entirely black. In neighboring Lynwood, however, Latinos have taken hold of the local city council, and some argue that they have diminished black political power there. And while some might argue that African Americans and Latinos might be natural allies if they could set apart arguments over topics like immigration, the truth is that real conversations between these two communities rarely occurs. Meanwhile, as some Latinos point to the black civil rights struggle as an example to learn from, we sometimes forget that African Americans continue to fight for equality to this day; and some African Americans point out that there are no go-to representatives to articulate the frustrations some feel about a topic like immigration. Loyola Marymount University is hosting Real Talk: Brown and Black Teach-in this evening at the Laband Art Gallery. The Gallery is currently showing a photo exhibit called The African Legacy in Mexico by Tony Gleaton. Tonight’s mix of intellectual discourse and art will bring together community members and organizers as well as academics to talk about the socio-political and economic issues that impact Black and Brown relations. The event will also feature an All-Women African Drum group, Son Jarocho and hip hop performances.

REAL TALK: BROWN & BLACK Teach-in/Listen-in on
Thursday, Nov. 15, from 6 to 9 p.m.
The Laband Art Gallery at Loyola Marymount University.

For more information,
contact Carolyn Peter, Laband Art Gallery director, 310.338.3087,
Michael Datcher: 323.702-8586 mdatcher@lmu.edu
Ruben Martinez: rmartinez@lmu.edu.
Parking information and campus map can be found at http://www.lmu.edu/maps.

| the entire program GUESTS: Elliot Perry, Marx Gutierrez, Organizers with LA Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) Erin Aubry Kaplan, LA Times Contributing Editor Because of rapidly changing demographics in the City of Compton, Latinos make up about 58 percent of the population – and it’s indicative of how Latinos are remaking black districts.
