Modeled on Arizona’s controversial bill HB 1070, Georgia’s HB 87 authorizes police to look into the immigration status of suspects, criminalize the transportation or aiding of undocumented immigrants, force businesses to use the federal employee database to check immigration status of all employees, and, among other things, make it a felony to falsify documents when applying for a job. Most of the bill’s provisions were set to go into effect on July 1st. However, a lawsuit filed by civil liberties and immigrant rights groups has succeeded in blocking two major aspects of bill from going into effect. Similar bills in Arizona, Utah, and Indiana, have been blocked by courts. Last Friday, there was an organized work stoppage by immigrant workers protesting the bill, and over the long weekend, nearly 15,000 people marched in Athens, Georgia, against HB 87. Georgia has the 7th largest undocumented immigrant population in the U.S. The employee verification aspect of the bill has drawn strong criticism from business groups. Earlier this week, representatives from Georgia’s agriculture, hospitality and manufacturing sectors publicly condemned HB 87 for making it harder to employ undocumented immigrants. President Barack Obama criticized the Georgia bill after it was signed into law, saying that immigration reform should be enacted at the federal level, rather than state by state, and used the sharp escalation in immigrant deportations during his tenure as proof of his commitment to be “tough on immigration.”

GUEST: Azadeh Shahshahani, National Security and Immigrant Rights Program Director of the ACLU of Georgia

Find out more at www.acluga.org and www.girrc.org.

A harsh anti-immigrant bill signed into law earlier this year in the state of Georgia, has been facing challenges in the courts and on the streets.
