One of Arizona’s most powerful state senators has been recalled. Russell Pearce was the chief architect of the highly controversial immigration bill SB1070 which passed in 2010 and was signed into law, sparking protests and calls for boycott nationwide. Although a court injunction stripped the bill of some of its most contested provisions, opponents remain outraged. Pearce has been unseated by the recall committee, Citizens for a Better Arizona, which gathered about 16,900 signatures through a petition, 10,365 of which were certified as valid on Friday by the Country Elections Director. This put the campaign comfortably above the 7,756 signature minimum needed to trigger a recall of Pearce, who represents District 18 in the city of Mesa, within Maricopa County. Citizens for a Better Arizona says the state Senator is “too extreme” for Mesa and Arizona. In addition to SB1070, CBA finds a long list of Pearce-backed legislation objectionable, including: HR2011 allowing concealed guns on college campuses, HCR 2196 requiring the private operation of state parks, and SB 1611, another omnibus anti-immigration bill. Pearce can challenge the validity of the signatures and is reportedly weighing that option. Governor Jan Brewer has fifteen days from Friday to set a date for the recall election. <\/p>\n
