The US Department of Agriculture just released a report confirming that milk and meat from animals produced through cloning is safe for human consumption and does not pose a safety risk to the global food supply. The decision is apparently based on six years of extensive study, the analysis of more than 400 comprehensive studies, and the evaluation of hundreds of nutritional and compositional datapoints. But according to the Center for Food Safety the USDA assessment only references three peer-reviewed food safety studies, all of which focus on the narrow issue of milk from cloned cows. The Financial Times characterized the opposition to cloning as “predictable Luddite hysteria.” According to a recent Gallup Poll more than 60 percent of Americans believe that it is immoral to clone animals, while the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology found that a similar percentage say that, despite FDA approval, they won’t buy milk from cloned animals.
