On Saturday, according to protestors, the NYPD blocked participants from continuing a planned march over the bridge and made arrests. Police allege the hundreds of arrested marchers attempted to occupy the famous bridge, but some of those detained, including a New York Times reporter, refute this version of events. Defying expectations Occupy Wall Street not only continues, but is growing. Beginning last week labor unions joined the so-called 99 percenters who began their occupation of US financial headquarters on September 17th. The ranks have swollen by thousands as groups- many of them labor unions or union members – have joined the protest at Zucotti Park or held solidarity actions. Hundreds of members of the Air Line Pilots Association, including 700 Continental and United pilots, marched in uniform last Tuesday. The New York Transit Workers Union has been providing food and support since last week, and members will march on Wednesday. SEIU and United Federation of Teacher locals, professors with the Professional Staff Conference, the Working Families Party and MoveOn.org are all joining what is becoming a national call for economic justice. The movement has spread from coast to coast including solidarity actions in Seattle, Boston, Portland, San Francisco, and LA. Occupy groups are forming in Clarksville, Tennesse, Columbia, South Carolina, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Jacksonville, Florida. The initial skepticism over the ability of a seemingly inexperienced, largely privileged class of young people to spark a popular movement inspired by Spain’s Indignados has given way to celebration. In a widely circulated “Open Letter,” Arun Gupta called for less criticism and more participation, observing, “[a] generation derided as narcissistic, apathetic and hopeless [is] staking a claim to a better future for all of us.”

GUEST: Arun Gupta, in New York, editor of the Indypendent and author of the much circulated Open Letter (From Arun Gupta) On the Wall Street Occupation: The Revolution Begins at Home

Find out more at www.indypendent.org.
