The movement that Chris Hedges has dubbed \u201ctoo big to fail<\/a>,\u201d manifesting itself in cities across the globe, was sparked by a call to action this summer by Adbusters magazine. Adbusters, based in Canada, is a non-profit anti-consumerist publication that for over 20 years has spoofed popular advertizing, and is known for launching campaigns like the annual \u201cBuy Nothing Day\u201d each post-Thanksgiving. On July 13th 2011, Adbusters made a call to Occupy Wall Street, saying \u201c[o]n September 17, we want to see 20,000 people flood into lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months. Once there, we shall incessantly repeat one simple demand in a plurality of voices.\u201d Now, over a month after the Occupy Wall Street protests are in full swing and have spawned hundreds of similar Occupy encampments around the world, Adbusters has proposed a single demand in a second statement released on Monday October 17th that they would like activists to consider supporting: \u201c[o]n October 29, on the eve of the G20 Leaders Summit in France, let\u2019s the people of the world rise up and demand that our G20 leaders immediately impose a 1% ROBINHOOD tax on all financial transactions and currency trades.\u201d <\/p>\nGUEST: Micah White, senior editor at Adbusters Magazine<\/em><\/p>\n
