The 25th annual American Film Institute Film “Fest” opened on November 3rd, and runs through this Thursday the 10th. Its schedule is packed with a combination of blockbuster flicks, international films and offerings by young American filmmakers. This year the AFI Fest is screening a number of politically themed films such as the Sundance award winning Kinyarwanda, a movie named after the national dialect of Rwanda. The film interweaves six stories taking place during the 1994 Rwandan genocide when mosques became places of refuge where embattled Tutsis and Hutus who refused to kill could congregate. A second film at this year’s AFI, “The Forgiveness of Blood,” explores deadly conflicts between neighbors and tensions between generations. Set in Albania, “The Forgiveness of Blood” is made by California born film maker, Joshua Marston, and deals with the weight of historic conflicts with a modern protagonist who is forced to deal with a blood feud after a confrontation over land use ends in murder. This year’s AFI FEST is also screening Werner Herzog’s new film Into The Abyss and will hold a special screening of Pedro Almodovar’s classic film Law of Desire. The American Film Institute was formed 45 years ago to \u201cpreserve the history of the motion picture,\u201d honor accomplished filmmakers of merit and educate young \u201cstorytellers.\u201d The festival is held at the historic Chinese Theater and the Egyptian Theater. <\/p>\n
