During his Nevada victory speech Romney continued his Florida strategy and campaigned against President Obama rather than his fellow Republicans.

However an ABC/Washington Post poll this weekend found Romney is not the voter’s choice when matched in a hypothetical race against the President. Obama was favored by registered voters 51% to 45% over the weekend. ABC News reports Romney’s popularity is slipping after voters became aware that he pays a relatively low tax rate, and after notable gaffes including last week’s when Romney said he “didn’t care about the very poor.” Sixty-six percent of voters polled said he pays too little in taxes and 53% said they trust President Obama to protect the middle class while only 36% felt the same about Romney.

The former Massachusetts state Governor now leads with a total of 101 delegates for his party’s nominating convention this August. Newt Gingrich comes in second, with 32 delegates, Rick Santorum has 17 and Ron Paul trails with 9. While speaking in Nevada after his second straight loss since he won South Carolina Newt Gingrich told voters he has a long term strategy saying, “[o]ur goal is to get to Super Tuesday, which is much more favorable territory.” Rick Santorum also pledged to stay in the race while campaigning in Minnesota on Sunday, buoyed by polls showing he has a slight edge over over Romney and Gingrich.

Tomorrow GOP voters will cast ballots for their presidential nomination in Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri, splintering the candidates time and financial resources for the first time since the primaries began.

GUEST: Ari Berman is a contributing writer for The Nation magazine and an Investigative Journalism Fellow at The Nation Institute.
