The rising Mississippi River broke through a levee yesterday, forcing authorities to rescue about a half-dozen people by helicopter, boat and four-wheeler as floodwaters moved south into Illinois and Missouri. The village of Oakville in Iowa, just north of Burlington, has been submerged under an estimated 13 feet of water. The floods are expected to increase already soaring food prices. The 2008 tornado season is already the deadliest in a decade, and could shape up as the deadliest on record. When the corporate media covers these and other stories about hurricanes and extreme weather patterns, the larger context of climate change as a cause is never cited.
