Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in Burma on August 8th, 1988 to demand democracy. On the occasion of the country’s 40th anniversary of independence, students, workers and Buddhist monks protested for the restoration of democracy following the resignation of General Ne Win a month prior. The 8.8.88 uprising started in Rangoon and soon spread to the rest of the country. At least 3,000 were said to be killed by the violent repression of a new military dictatorship that took power the following month in September. To this day, more than 2,000 political prisoners remain in jail from the uprising, including U Win Tin, a 78 year old dissident journalist. After the Burmese uprising last fall, he has been joined by almost one thousand new political prisoners.

Different generations, same old repressions….

Let’s keep it real!
