Citing a lack of nutritional information on fast food restaurant menus, teens from Baldwin Park and South Los Angeles are declaring a fast food boycott. Tomorrow the teens have organized a public demonstration, and invited their peers and community allies to join their action on what’s known as “Restaurant Row,” in South Los Angeles. From then, the boycott will continue through myspace.com and text messaging word-of-mouth campaigns until fast food chains post caloric counts on their menu boards. South Los Angeles, which has the highest concentration of fast food restaurants in the county, has already been subjected to a city council approved one-year moratorium on new outlets opening up in the area. The youth organizing comes at a time when a new report finds that nearly sixty percent of Californians are either overweight or obese. Released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Trust for America’s Health, the study echoes calls for menu labeling at restaurants to combat rising obesity rates. In fact, the California Assembly is currently considering SB 1420, which would do just that. If passed the bill would require restaurant chains of 15 outlets or more to post caloric and other nutritional information on menus statewide. <\/p>\n
