Dr. James Leape, Director General of the WWF, addressed the World Water Week conference happening this week in Stockholm, Sweden, and added that this water crisis is expected to rapidly worsen as climate change impacts intensify. Leape explained that with 45% of world food supplies currently fed by irrigation, food security will depend on careful water management. Additionally, he said, 40% of all Earth\u2019s species live in freshwater. People who fish in freshwater systems will suffer if water quality continues to decline. Meanwhile, the water-wasting infrastructure and practices common in many wealthy nations continues to contaminate groundwater and drain aquifers.
