The human-rights group said it had collected reports on more than 40 cases in which people resisting relocation had set themselves on fire between 2009 and 2011, a sharp rise from previous years.<\/p>\n<p>Forced evictions are a well-documented issue in China. For years, local governments have been seizing land, selling off development rights and relocating hundreds of thousands of people as part of urban renewal and redevelopment projects, including the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Shanghai Expo.<\/p>\n<p>But after the global financial crisis, momentum for such projects continued as Beijing ordered local governments to help stimulate the economy.
