At 10 a.m this morning, the Supreme Court Justices filed into the most important courthouse in the land, upon which the inscription \u201dEqual Justice Under the Law\u201d is prominently inscribed. There they will be deciding the fate of millions of Americans to marry whomsoever they choose. Since the early hours of the morning crowds have gathered outside the Supreme Court to express their opinions on the Californian Proposition 8 and the even more controversial Defense of Marriage Act. Police were there to keep things under control and to potentially separate protesters of opposing views. This was an unnecessary precaution, as the vast majority there where expressing their support for the repeal of these discriminatory laws.<\/p>\n
The signs and slogans American\u2019s have been hearing for years were colorfully expressed. \u201cI believe everyone has the right to make their husband as miserable as I do\u201d one brave poster stated. The demographics of the crowd was a sight to behold, and I was surprised to see so many children, some just infants there with full families to be a part of history in the making. I spoke to one woman, Ann, who was there with her three year old daughter. They wore matching red jackets, covered with photos of their modern family. I asked Ann if she could describe to me how important today was for her, and her eyes filled with tears. \u201cJust thinking about it makes me cry,\u201d she said. \u201cMy wife Sharon and I have been working on this for 10 years. She\u2019s been organizing members of the clergy here to DC to openly demonstrate their support for the cause\u201d. And the clergy were there, representing half a dozen different denominations and religion, walking through the crowds and singing the traditional hymn. \u201cWe Shall Overcome\u201d.<\/p>\n
