Part of the protest demonstration included handing \u201coil canisters filled with the names of 120,000 people to the Peruvian embassies and consulates, asking Peru\u2019s President to stop outsiders and companies from invading uncontacted tribes\u2019 land,\u201d according to a Survival International press release.<\/p>\n<p>A similar protest was set for 9 a.m. this morning in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>At each protest a letter was presented to the embassies and consulates by Survival that was addressed to Peru\u2019s President Ollanta Humala that said, \u201cOil drilling and logging in uncontacted tribes\u2019 territories could wipe the Indians out.<br \/>\nProtesters in Berlin wearing masks and helmets to symbolize the lethal effects of the Camisea project on Peru&#8217;s uncontacted tribes. (Courtesy Survival International)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease protect these peoples\u2019 right to live in peace and security \u2013 stop the loggers and oil companies from entering their land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Indian Country Today Media Network reported on March 4, Peru recognizes 15 isolated groups, possibly totaling as many as 10,000 people, in various parts of Peru\u2019s Amazon region, according to Jes\u00fas Castro Su\u00e1rez, director of Ecodess, a non-profit organization working with The Inter-Ethnic Association for Development of the Peruvian Amazon (Asociaci\u00f3n Inter\u00e9tnica de Desarrollo de la Selva Peruana, Aidesep). There are five \u201cterritorial reserves,\u201d covering some 10,860 miles, that protect areas inhabited by some of the groups, but others are unprotected.
