On October 1st, 1910, twenty-one people were killed as planted dynamite exploded igniting barrels of ink near the building. The bombing occurred during the Los Angeles Iron Workers strike that demanded a modest wage increase. The owner of the LA Times during the bombing was Harrison Gray Otis, a vehemently anti-union conservative who used his newspaper as well as his position in the Merchants and Manufactures\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Association to assail against organizing workers. Prominent trade unionists James B. and John J.
