{"id":35505,"date":"2013-05-10T12:43:04","date_gmt":"2013-05-10T19:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uprisingradio.org\/home\/?p=35505"},"modified":"2013-05-10T12:43:04","modified_gmt":"2013-05-10T19:43:04","slug":"slate-a-shocking-look-at-americas-altered-landscapes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uprisingradio.org\/home\/2013\/05\/10\/slate-a-shocking-look-at-americas-altered-landscapes\/","title":{"rendered":"Slate: A Shocking Look at America\u2019s Altered Landscapes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is an overwhelming sense of disbelief when looking at David Maisel\u2019s aerial photographs of open-pit mines, toxic waste sites, logging, freeways and other scenes that mark the toll humans have left on earth.<\/p>\n<p>But the images found in Maisel\u2019s recent book Black Maps\u2014American Landscape and the Apocalyptic Sublime, published by Steidl, are all unaltered photographs of landscapes and the endless array of colors and strange patterns are abstracted visions of environmental devastation of land.<\/p>\n<p>Maisel first went up in a plane in 1983 over Mount St. Helens with one of his teachers, photographer Emmet Gowin.
