{"id":35946,"date":"2013-05-31T08:23:29","date_gmt":"2013-05-31T15:23:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uprisingradio.org\/home\/?p=35946"},"modified":"2013-05-31T08:23:29","modified_gmt":"2013-05-31T15:23:29","slug":"reuters-protests-could-halt-5-billion-peru-mine-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uprisingradio.org\/home\/2013\/05\/31\/reuters-protests-could-halt-5-billion-peru-mine-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Reuters: Protests Could Halt $5 Billion Peru Mine Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Stephen Eisenhammer<br \/>\n    LONDON, May 30 (Reuters) &#8211; Protests in northern Peru over<br \/>\nthe $5 billion Conga gold mine make &#8220;no sense&#8221; and could spell<br \/>\nthe end of the project if they succeed in preventing the<br \/>\ndraining of a nearby lake, the project&#8217;s junior partner said on<br \/>\nThursday.<br \/>\n    Tensions flared up again this week over Newmont&#8217;s<br \/>\nproposed mine, with hundreds of protesters taking to the streets<br \/>\nand bringing to an end nine months of relative calm.<\/p>\n<p>    &#8220;We are working with the best of intentions. If we can go<br \/>\nahead good, if we cannot that&#8217;s it&#8230; there are no<br \/>\nalternatives,&#8221; Roque Benavides, chief executive of Newmont&#8217;s<br \/>\npartner Buenaventura, told Reuters on the sidelines of<br \/>\na conference in London.<br \/>\n    Benavides said he did not understand the protests because<br \/>\nthe planned transfer of water from Lake Perol to a new reservoir<br \/>\nhad not yet begun.<br \/>\n    &#8220;People may complain but it has no sense,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n    The construction of the mine, which would be Peru&#8217;s most<br \/>\nexpensive ever, was put on hold last year until local disputes<br \/>\nover water supply could be resolved. Benavides said this<br \/>\napproach had not changed.<br \/>\n    &#8220;We are doing our best. We are not mining, we are following<br \/>\nthe main thing which is water first.&#8221;<br \/>\n    A spokesman at Newmont reiterated the &#8220;water first&#8221; position<br \/>\nbut would not say whether being unable to drain Lake Perol would<br \/>\nbe a turning point.<br \/>\n    In an interview with Reuters last week Benavides said that<br \/>\nconstruction of the mine would begin if the company could pump<br \/>\nwater from Lake Perol into the second of four reservoirs it is<br \/>\nbuilding without sparking broad local opposition.<\/p>\n<p>    Lake Perol is one of several alpine lakes in Cajamarca that<br \/>\nwould be affected by the proposed mine, which would essentially<br \/>\nextend the life of the nearby Yanacocha mine the two companies<br \/>\nrun.<br \/>\n    But protesters told Reuters on Thursday that they would not<br \/>\ngive up and that plans to occupy Lake Perol on June 17 had<br \/>\nalready been set.<br \/>\n    &#8220;We won&#8217;t be happy until the government says the project<br \/>\nwill not go forward,&#8221; said community leader Milton Sanchez. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Stephen Eisenhammer LONDON, May 30 (Reuters) &#8211; Protests in northern Peru over the $5 billion Conga gold mine make &#8220;no sense&#8221; and could spell the end of the project if they succeed in preventing the draining of a nearby lake, the project&#8217;s junior partner said on Thursday.
