{"id":37189,"date":"2013-08-09T07:26:43","date_gmt":"2013-08-09T14:26:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uprisingradio.org\/home\/?p=37189"},"modified":"2013-08-09T07:26:43","modified_gmt":"2013-08-09T14:26:43","slug":"treehugger-6-to-12-percent-of-the-methane-produced-is-leaking-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uprisingradio.org\/home\/2013\/08\/09\/treehugger-6-to-12-percent-of-the-methane-produced-is-leaking-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"TreeHugger:  6 to 12 percent of the methane produced is leaking, study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, Professor Anthony Ingraffea published a strong op-ed in The New York Times, in which he noted that &#8220;unless [natural gas] leaks can be kept below 2 percent, gas lacks any climate advantage over coal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now, a new study confirms those concerns, finding that, on average, 6 to 12 percent of the methane produced is leaking.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Romm at Climate Progress has the details:<\/p>\n<p>    A major new study in Geophysical Research Letters by 19 researchers \u2014 primarily from NOAA and the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) \u2014 suggests natural gas may be more of gangplank than a bridge.<br \/>\n    &#8230;<br \/>\n    The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) called the emissions rates \u201calarmingly high.\u201d While the researchers conducted 12 flights, \u201cthey selected just one as their data source for this paper,\u201d ClimateWire reports.
