On October 22nd, 1836 the slave owning opponent of the abolitionist movement began his first of what would be two terms of office presiding over the Lone Star Republic. Prior to Houston\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s inauguration, Texas had been Mexican territory when Anglo settlers started an insurrection to establish independence. Houston became a commander of the Texas Army and led them into the key battle of San Jacinto.
