Los Angeles is considered the epi-center of a burgeoning national movement for immigrant rights. In downtown Los Angeles hundreds of thousands defied calls to not miss work and showed up with their families, wearing white. That noon-time march was part of a “Day without an Immigrant” or a boycott march, called by the March 25th coalition. Later in the day, an even bigger mobilization, perhaps over a million, gathered at MacArthur park and marched up Wilshire Blvd to La Brea. The afternoon march had been called by labor unions, immigrant rights groups, church leaders like Cardinal Roger Mahony, and mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, as an alternative to the boycott march. The result was a full day of protests throughout Los Angeles with many establishments closed for the day.

In Orange County, tens of thousands marched through the streets of downtown Santa Ana. Mobilizations continued for hours throughout the day with demonstrations taking place from noontime until as late as 7 p.m. Many small businesses around the area were also closed for the day.

The LA Unified School District reported that 72,000 middle and high school students were absent — roughly one in every four. Orange County saw similar absences, as thousands of students gathered at the noon-time rally, including the newly-formed Orange County Conscious Student Uprising (OCCSU).

May Day protests were held in cities throughout the country including San Jose, Chicago, New York, and cities in New Mexico, Florida, Massachusetts, and Tenessee.

KPFK was at both the protests yesterday, bringing you live coverage. Today on Uprising, we bring you a reportback from yesterday’s two marches. We’ll hear the chants and songs of the protest, as well as interviews with marchers. The first interview is with Eddie Santelo, better known as “el Piolin,” one of LA’s most popular DJ’s on the Spanish language, La Nueva 101.9-FM, who played a big role in rallying people to come out to the streets in the last three major marches.

Yesterday, millions of people across the US and Los Angeles came out in a May Day boycott and protest to demand rights for immigrants.
