Acclaimed actress, poet, writer and activist Ruby Dee died yesterday at the age of 91. While her best known role was in the 1961 film, Raisin in the Sun, she was also a powerful civil rights activist, working alongside her husband Ossie Davis. Dee was actively involved in the Congress of Racial Equality or CORE, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee or SNCC and the NAACP. Born in 1922, Dee helped pave the way for African American actors throughout her long illustrious career. <\/p>\n
