It has been more than 3 years since the devastating nuclear accident at Japan’s Fukushima plant, sparked by a tsunami and earthquake. While Japanese authorities have dismissed claims of health impacts on residents and minimized surrounding contamination, the New York Times this week explained in a report entitled, “Assessing Fukushima Damage Without Eyes on the Inside,” how little is really known. <\/p>\nReporter Matthew L. Wald wrote in the Times, “nobody has yet examined many of the most important parts of the wreckage. Though three and a half years have passed, it is still too dangerous to climb inside for a look, and sending in a camera would risk more leaks.” <\/p>\n
What we do know about Fukushima in a disturbing new report is that there are tangible health impacts \u2013 on children living in and around Fukushima. The Fukushima Medical University recently tested hundreds of thousands of children and found that nearly half of them have “pre-cancerous thyroid abnormalities, primarily nodules, and cysts.” <\/p>\n
