{"id":41048,"date":"2014-08-14T09:49:16","date_gmt":"2014-08-14T16:49:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uprisingradio.org\/home\/?p=41048"},"modified":"2014-08-14T09:49:16","modified_gmt":"2014-08-14T16:49:16","slug":"eco-literacy-is-not-enough-to-fix-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uprisingradio.org\/home\/2014\/08\/14\/eco-literacy-is-not-enough-to-fix-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"Eco-Literacy Is Not Enough To Fix Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><ul class=\"inline-playlist playlist\" title=\"\"><li><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/download\/20140814Uprising\/2014_08_14_ecoliteracy.mp3\">Listen to this segment with Monty Hempel <\/a><\/li><\/ul><ul class=\"inline-playlist playlist\" title=\"\"><li><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/download\/20140814Uprising\/2014_08_14_uprising.mp3\">Listen to the entire program with Sonali Kolhatkar<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" align=right width=50% src=\"\/home\/graphics\/eco_literacy.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>If you Google the words &#8216;climate change&#8217; this is the kind of dire headline that might pop up: &#8220;Climate Change will be catastrophic for mankind after study reveals methane leaking from the Arctic Ocean.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>While you might think that a fear inducing title like this would motivate more people to change their behavior and at least live a greener life-style or engage in political protest, researchers are finding that simply knowing that change needs to happen is not enough. <\/p>\n<p>A new report by the Worldwatch Institute titled &#8216;State of the World 2014: Governing for Sustainibility&#8217; finds among other things, that the extent of a person&#8217;s eco-literacy or level of knowledge about the environmental crisis, does not necessarily determine their desire to take action to prevent environmental disaster. <\/p>\n<p>Environmental education needs to go beyond mere scientific understanding of climate change to encompass broader issues of ethics, culture and politics. In other words, &#8220;Knowledge is Not Enough&#8221; which is the title of one of the sections in the report. <\/p>\n<p><em>GUEST: Monty Hempel is Professor of Environmental Science at University of Redlands.
