As Iraq’s new cabinet was being approved, US President Obama had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Al Abadi, and, according to a White House statement, emphasized, “the need for the United States and Iraq to continue working closely \u2026 to counter the threat posed by the Islamic State.” Iraq’s new government has been re-constituted in line with US demands to reflect underrepresented Sunni and Kurdish minorities. Obama plans to unveil his strategy against ISIS tomorrow. The World Health Organization has raised the alarm again on the Ebola virus, announcing yesterday that new cases in Liberia in particular, are rising exponentially. More than half of the 2,000+ people who have died so far from the disease are Liberian. The WHO has urged for current efforts to be multiplied 3 or 4 fold to adequately contain Ebola. The announcement came hours after President Obama offered the US military’s resources to combat the disease after a member of Doctors Without Borders made a desperate plea. Obama justified the move based on the possibility of the virus becoming a danger to the US. There is a fear that the virus could mutate before it is contained, and become harder to control. A constitutional amendment that could undermine the campaign finance-related Supreme Court decisions of Citizens United and McCutcheon, was passed in a procedural vote by the US Senate 79-18. In order to become law it still needs a supermajority in the House which is unlikely, and a final supermajority vote in the Senate. Republicans apparently joined in the vote on Monday, hoping that debate over the amendment would bog down the Senate and delay key bills that Democrats want passed.
