On December 25th, 1868, with the powers of his office, President Johnson granted unconditional amnesty to soldiers who fought for the Confederate south during the Civil War. As one of the last significant acts of his embattled presidency, the move was unpopular with Northerners who had considered the Confederacy traitorous. With the Christmas Day pardon, President Johnson, who was soon to be succeeded by Ulysses S. Grant, cemented his administration\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s antagonistic policies towards post-civil war reconstruction.
