Repression of Indigenous Communities in Oaxaca<\/strong>

\"CIPO-RFM<\/a>Since 1997, indigenous communities in the south western state of Oaxaca, Mexico, have been facing serious repression and human rights violations by government and paramilitary forces. About 70 percent of Oaxaca\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s population is indigenous. One of the most targeted groups is a grassroots, non-violent organization formed of various indigenous communities, founded in 1997. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s called CIPO-RFM which stands for Consejo Indigena Popular de Oaxaca \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Ricardo Flores Magon. They struggle against extreme poverty, deforestation, privatization of their land, and the presence of paramilitary forces. Since their formation there have been hundreds of people detained and\/or tortured; raids by the military, police and paramilitaries, assassinations and serious injuries. Today we present an interview with one of the founding members of CIPO-RFM, Raul Gatica. After surviving numerous attempts on his life, Raul went into exile in June 2005 in Vancouver, Canada. He has been arrested, imprisoned and tortured many times. I had the chance to speak with Raul Gatica yesterday on the phone from Vancouver. Angela Theilan-Martin volunteered as interpreter. <\/p>\n

Hurricane Stan Fundraiser<\/strong>

\"Guatamalan<\/a>Hurricane Stan struck Guatemala on October 4th and has since claimed over 2,100 lives. An estimated 1.5 million people in Guatemala have been affected. Floodwaters have contaminated many farmlands and mudslides have destroyed entire villages. <\/p>\n

There will be a cultural program this Sunday December 4th from 4-7 pm to benefit Hurricane Stan victims. The program will be held at the Glendale City College Student Center, 1500 N. Verdugo in Glendale. Parking is available at Student Lot B. <\/p>\n

You may remember we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been following closely the case of Orange County based activist Theresa Dang who was recently charged with theft of lost property by Garden Grove police, after she publicly criticized their conduct at a demonstration. Theresa Dang was targeted while pro-Minute Man Project supporter Hal Netkin who hit several protestors with his car at the demonstration, was never charged. Theresa was just acquitted yesterday – all charges have been dropped. <\/p>\n

A Play About Student Resistance to Recruitment, Militarism, and War<\/strong>
