That is the question put forward by filmmaker Ann Kaneko in her new documentary entitled, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Against the Grain: An Artist\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Survival Guide to Peru.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Kaneko received a Fulbright Fellowship in 2001 to travel and live in Peru for a year. It was during that stay that she began filming \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Against the Grain.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The documentary highlights four distinct Peruvian artists and how they have each dealt with censorship and Peru\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tumultuous history. The artists explore themes such as the Shining Path, corruption under Fujimori\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s regime, and race, gender, and class in Peruvian society. With Kaneko\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s subsequent return to Peru, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Against the Grain,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d brings viewers to the present under the newly elected administration of Alan Garcia. <\/p>\n<p>There will be a benefit art sale at the Caracola Gallery for completion funds for the documentary film, Against the Grain:  An Artist\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Survival Guide to Peru.  Works from the artists included in the film and local Southern California artists will be for sale. Local artists include Rub\u00c3\u00a9n Ortiz Torres, Todd Gray, Kyungmi Shin, Yong Soon Min, Emelda Gutierrez and Victor Rosas. Donations to the film will be tax-deductible through Women Make Movies, the film\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fiscal sponsor.
