More than forty years ago, nine conscientious Catholics took hundreds of draft files from a selective service office in Catonsville, Maryland and burned them with homemade napalm. As a result of this act of civil disobedience that took place during the height of the Vietnam War, the nine were convicted during a subsequent trial and were collectively given long prison sentences. In re-recreating this history on-stage, The Actors\u2019 Gang is currently presenting \u201cThe Trial of the Catonsville Nine.\u201d Drawing from actual historical court transcripts, the play provocatively asks the question, \u201cIs there a difference between breaking the law and committing a crime?\u201d Written by Father Daniel Berrigan, a participant in the file-burning act in 1967, and directed by John Kellam, \u201cThe Trial of Catonsville Nine,\u201d explores the deep moral reasoning behind the defendants\u2019 action.
