By pressuring the Los Angeles City Council to implement a freeze on condo conversions, activists say that proposals can be developed in the meantime to protect renters and affordable housing. Critics of the condo conversion trend say that it displaces residents out of affordable housing and sometimes out of the state of California. According to the Los Angeles Housing Department, over 11,000 condo and demolition related evictions have taken place in the last five years. Two Los Angeles City Council Members, Alex Padilla and Bill Rosendahl, have already called for freezes on all conversions in their respective districts.
