GUEST: Felipe Aguirre, Vice Mayor of Maywood<\/em><\/p>\nThis Saturday, anti-immigrant groups such as Save Our State and the Minutemen Project will be holding a rally in Maywood to protest the city\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision to become a sanctuary for the undocumented. Counter- demonstrators plan to gather in front of Maywood’s City Hall to denounce the presence of the anti-immigrant groups. Last January, Maywood garnered national attention when city officials declared it a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153sanctuary\u00e2\u20ac\u009d city in response to House Resolution 4437. In addition to the declaration, the council majority eliminated the Police\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Traffic Division after receiving complaints of officers unfairly targeting undocumented immigrants. Maywood\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Deputy Mayor, Felipe Aguirre, who has spearheaded many of the efforts to improve the lives of the undocumented, began receiving threats after the sanctuary resolution. According to court records, one threat targeted at Aguirre read, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Focus on your residents, not on wetbacks.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d A small city south of downtown Los Angeles, Maywood is approximately 96% percent Latino and more than half of its residents are foreign born.<\/p>\n
