The Grapes of Wrath<\/strong><\/p>\nBack in the day on May 6th, 1940, author John Steinbeck\u2019s novel \u201cThe Grapes of Wrath,\u201d won a Pulitzer Prize. First published seventy years ago, Steinbeck\u2019s story chronicled the migration of the fictional Joad family from Oklahoma to California. Set in the \u201cDust Bowl\u201d era of the Great Depression, \u201cThe Grapes of Wrath,\u201d portrayed the plight of \u201cOkies\u201d looking for work and searching for hope in California\u2019s Central Valley only to find the exploitation of harsh labor conditions instead. With a strong intent, Steinbeck wrote his editor in 1938 saying \u201cI\u2019ve done my damndest to rip a reader\u2019s nerves to rags.\u201d The novel certainly struck a nerve as it went on to sell nearly half a million copies in its first year of publication before being awarded the Pulitzer Prize shortly thereafter. <\/p>\n
Steinbeck\u2019s work also did indeed incur a \u201cwrath\u201d of its own as it also became a target of censorship through the years, but as Oscar Wilde once said, \u201cThe books that the world calls immoral are the books that show the world its own shame.\u201d<\/p>\n
