<\/a>This year Pacifica Radio celebrates its 60th year, and KPFK it’s 50th year of existence. And even though we in public radio are excited about these milestones, this year also marks a century of progressive media in print. Simply called The Progressive, the magazine of radical dissent and analysis has been around since 1909 and still going strong, keeping alive a legacy that includes everyone from James Baldwin and Upton Sinclair to Howard Zinn and Arundhati Roy. With the advent of the internet, print media is in peril most dramatically seen in the newspaper industry. But magazines are also floundering. And yet, a publication like the Progressive with a dedicated subscribership, has survived for a hundred years and plans to continue for a hundred more. A new book, celebrating the centennial, called Democracy in Print, showcases the best of the Progressive Magazine featuring thematically grouped articles that have appeared in the magazine. Themes include Renouncing Empire, Weaving a Safety Net, and Joining the Cause of Gay Liberation. Authors include a plethora of well known progressives like Edward Said, Bertrand Russell, Eduardo Galeano, Alice Walker, and many many others. <\/p>\n
