Jesus Camp is a new documentary by film makers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady that looks into the often disturbing world of evangelical indoctrination of children in middle America. With incredible access to a community follow three children, Levi, Rachael, and Tory as they head to a Bible summer camp called “Kids on Fire.” Becky Fisher, a children’s pastor who runs the camp is unabashed about the indoctrination of young children who she hopes will grow up to continue a right wing legacy in the US and win the so-called culture war. From overturning abortion, to supporting President Bush and the state of Israel, to debunking the science of global warming and evolution, Jesus Camp is a wake up call to anyone who underestimates the political power of the Christian right. <\/p>\n

\nVeterans of War, Veterans of Peace<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"MaxineGUEST: Maxine Hong Kingston, editor of “Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace,” author of many books including Warrior Woman, China Men, and The Fifth Book of Peace<\/em><\/p>\n

Maxine Hong Kingston is a well-known writer and poet based in Oakland, California. In 1976 she wrote the acclaimed novel, The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts,” which explored ethnicity and gender roles, especially in the context of her experience as a Chinese-American woman. The Warrior Woman, and her follow up novel, China Men both won the National Book Critic\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Circle Award. In 1991, a firestorm in Oakland wiped out Maxine’s home as well as an unfinished manuscript. She turned that experience into an opportunity to teach writing to war veterans and for years now has conducted writing workshops with hundreds of veterans and their families. These experiences became the focus of a book called “The Fifth Book of Peace.” Many of the writings from her workshops are published in a new anthology she edited called “Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace” which features the words of war veterans and peace activists. I spoke with Maxine Hong Kingston recently and asked her to describe this new book. <\/p>\n

7-Eleven Corporation just announced that it is switching suppliers for its retail gasoline network from the Venezuela based Citgo with its own brand. The move comes only days after Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, whom we just heard, addressed the United Nations in a speech that derided US President George W. Bush for being \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the devil.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Chavez also recommended Noam Chomsky\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s book, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Hegemony or Survival\u00e2\u20ac\u009d for Americans to read \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which skyrocketed to the top of Amazon.com\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s sales ranking as a result and prompted the New York Times to interview Chomsky. In his speech, Chavez challenged the Bush administration\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s military based democracy promotion around the world, and suggested new ideas for reforming the United Nations. Predictably the mainstream corporate media heard only the remarks calling Bush the devil. Democrat Charles Rangel took offense, saying \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t come to the United States and think, because we have problems with our president, that any foreigner can come to our country and not think that Americans do not feel offended when you offend our chief of state.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi who called Chavez \u00e2\u20ac\u0153an everyday thug.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Meanwhile Ecuadoran presidential candidate Rafael Correa responded \u00e2\u20ac\u0153calling Bush the devil is offending the devil \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 the devil is evil, but intelligent.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n
