Setting the stage years earlier, Ghana became the first black African country to obtain independence from colonial rule on March 6th, 1957. As one of the main motivating forces behind the liberation movement against Britain, Nkrumah served as Ghana\u2019s first Prime Minister before later becoming its first President. The independent example of the West African republic extended beyond Ghana to all colonized African states as Nkrumah became legendary for speaking out against the colonization of the continent. He was also the first to publicly call for Pan-African unity. In 1965, Nkrumah published the book \u201cNeocolonialism\u201d where he exposed how foreign companies and governments were enriching themselves at the expense of the African people.
