A peaceful protest by members of the ethnic Uyghur population calling for an investigation into the killing of at least two Uyghurs by Han Chinese in a Southern China factory, deteriorated into a full scale riot. Independently verifiable details are not available about what actually happened, who incited the riots and how many were killed. Yesterday, a group of demonstrators surprised authorities by crashing a state-controlled tour for foreign journalists through the devastated Uyghur neighborhoods: they demanded police release the scores of Uyghur men who have been arrested. The Chinese government has acted swiftly to shut down internet service in vast swaths of the country, as well as various social networking sites, and cell phone service, and purged internet search engines in order to control the flow of information. The government blames an organization of exiled and expatriate Ugyhurs called the World Uyghur Congress and its leader Rebiya Kadeer, for inciting the riots from outside the country. Uyghurs are a Turkic-speaking, predominantly Muslim ethnic minority that have long complained of systematic discrimination and oppression.
