Exactly forty years ago, \u2018the biggest rock concert of its time\u2019 extended past its schedule into the early Monday morning hours. Those who stayed until the end witnessed one of the most prolific guitarists in rock music history turn in a two-hour set unforgettably symbolized by his distorted rendition of the \u201cStar Spangled Banner.\u201d The performance capped a weekend in which as many as half a million people gathered at a farm field in Bethel, New York to see an extensive lineup featuring some of the best rock, folk, and progressive popular music of the sixties. Hendrix was joined by the likes of The Who, Janis Joplin, Carlos Santana, and the Grateful Dead.
