Huey Newton\u2019s Support of Women and Gays<\/strong><\/p>\nBack in the day on August 21st, 1970, Huey P. Newton of the Black Panther Party wrote an honest and powerful statement in favor of gay and women\u2019s rights. Published in the pages of the party\u2019s newspaper, \u201cA Letter from Huey to the Revolutionary Brothers and Sisters About the Women\u2019s Liberation and Gay Liberation Movements,\u201d argued for the formation of coalitions over acknowledged insecurities. The passages contained strong sentiments from the black power leader who wrote, \u201cWe recognize the women\u2019s right to be free,\u201d and further cautioned against the use of derogatory terms when he said, \u201cThe terms \u2018faggot\u2019 and \u2018punk\u2019 should be deleted from our vocabulary.\u201d Newton advanced from this premise to call for the inclusion of these movements in rallies, demonstrations and revolutionary conferences. <\/p>\n
The words of the influential Black Panther leader were hailed in retrospect as a \u201cmajor breakthrough,\u201d and \u201cthe first openly pro-gay statement by a major heterosexual movement activist of any race,\u201d by author Sherry Wolf in her new book \u201cSexuality and Socialism.\u201d <\/p>\n
