Talented singer and songwriter Lila Downs returns to Los Angeles this week for a couple of performances. Born in Oaxaca, Downs is best known for her experimental blending of Mexican and Mixtec traditions with American folk music, her multi-lingual lyrics, and strong political statements. Her song Burn It Blue in Salma Hayak’s film Frida, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song. Her latest album, one of eight released over 15 years, Shake Away, features collaborations with the likes of Mercedes Sosa. I had the chance to speak recently with Lila Downs and talk about her music, particularly her latest album Shake Away. Today we’ll hear that interview as well as excerpts of many of her songs on that album.<\/p>\n
