The world\u2019s largest pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, has just agreed to pay $2.3 billion in a settlement for healthcare fraud. The Justice Department\u2019s announcement of the largest such settlement in its history, is the result of lawsuits by private whistleblowers in three states, accusing Pfizer of fraudulent marketing of drugs. Part of the settlement is a $1.2 billion criminal fine, which is also the largest in the DOJ\u2019s history. The settlement involves accusations against Pfizer of paying bribes to healthcare providers to pressure them to prescribe four separate drugs. A four-year long investigation by the Attorney General\u2019s office uncovered a wide array of questionable practices, including direct payments to doctors for prescribing drugs like Viagra. Pfizer has been involved in three other similar settlements, since 2002. To independent film producer Holly Mosher, the news comes as no surprise. In her recent documentary, Money Talks: Profits Before Patient Safety, she documents the on-going unethical relationship between your doctor and companies like Pfizer to push expensive and not always safe or effective drugs on to patients. <\/p>\n
