fred hamptonToday is the 40th anniversary of the murders of Black Panther Party members Fred Hampton Jr. and Mark Clark in Chicago. After their deaths, with increasing evidence that the police in collusion with the FBI knowingly carried out a raid that ended in murder, a lengthy legal battle ensued. At the heart of that battle was attorney Jeffrey Haas, who through the People’s Law Office in Chicago worked for years alongside other lawyers to bring justice for the murders of Hampton and Clark. In a new book called The Assassination of Fred Hampton: How the FBI & the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther, Jeffrey Haas tells the story of Fred Hampton, a rising star in the world of organizing, only 21 years old at the time of his murder. Haas also details the context of the FBI’s Cointelpro national intelligence program, the politics of Chicago in 1969, and the legacy of Hampton’s murder.
