Occupy Los Angeles and other anti-foreclosure activists groups will hold a candle light vigil tomorrow March 6th, in support of Blanca Cardenas, who was deported on February 29th. The 9 year resident of Van Nuys was contesting a recent foreclosure on her family’s home by Bank of America, where she lived with her husband Gerardo Quinones Cardenas and their two children, all three of whom are US citizens. Cardenas was arrested on the 22nd by the LAPD on charges of trespassing during a dispute with a man claiming to have purchased her family’s home at an auction, ordering her immediate eviction. Despite posting a $1,000 dollar bail, Cardenas was held for a week before being transferred to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Lynwood and deported to Tijuana, Mexico.

Occupy Fights Foreclosure, a group dedicated to keeping recently foreclosed families in their homes, has expressed outrage over the deportation. It will continue holding actions in support of the Cardenas family, including making them a focal point of a planned protest against foreclosures on March 10th. According to a 2011 report by Pro Publica, the Cardenas’s bank, Bank of America, has foreclosed on 27% of its delinquent loans with another 41% remaining unresolved. BofA is the largest holder of home mortgages, managing over 12 million, many of which it acquired in its takeover of the now defunct Countrywide Financial. The banking giant has been under scrutiny for practices like robo-signing that have resulted in thousands of fraudulent foreclosures in the past few years, and it was one of 5 banks that entered into a $25 billion settlement with 49 state Attorneys General over foreclosure fraud last month.

GUEST: Blanca Cardenas, an LA resident who was deported following the foreclosure of her home, Carlos Marroquin, a homeowner advocate and Occupy LA activist

There will be a candlelight vigil on Tuesday March 6th at 6 pm in front of the Cardenas’ foreclosed home, 5557 Elmer Avenue, North Hollywood CA.

There will also be a major rally on Sunday March 11th at 10 am at Placita Olvera to demand Blanca Cardenas’ repatriation.
