Charlie Beck to Replace Bratton as LAPD Chief
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will be formally announcing his choice of LAPD chief this morning. The three finalists who made it to the last round of interviews included the LAPD Deputy Chief Charlie Beck, Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell, and Deputy Chief Michel Moore. This morning’s LA Times blog reported just minutes ago that the Mayor has tapped Deputy police chief Charlie Beck. Beck will replace William Bratton who came in as an outsider to the city seven years ago from the East Coast. Bratton recently resigned to take a high-paying job with a private international security firm. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office just announced that it would not prosecute any of the LAPD’s officers involved in the violent clashes of the 2007 immigration Mayday march in Macarthur Park. The move comes as a surprise given that Chief Bratton himself took a strong position by disciplining several officers involved, and the LA City Council agreed to pay nearly $13 million to the plaintiffs.
