East LA Residents Organize Against 710 Expansion & Evictions

La RedL.A. is famous for its tangle of freeways. Despite the miles and miles of concrete tracks that criss-cross Southern California, traffic congestion is a persistent problem. In northern L.A. county multiple proposals to expand the reach of the 710 freeway have been killed by resistance from residents who would be affected by the construction. Currently, the 710 freeway begins in South Los Angeles and stretches North for about 30 miles, ending just before Pasadena and without connecting to the 110 freeway. Drivers wishing to continue on to Pasadena from the 710 must connect to the 110 freeway via downtown Los Angeles. Alleviating downtown traffic congestion is cited as the main reason to expand the 710. At present, the only expansion plan receiving serious consideration is one that proposes two 4.5 mile tunnels be drilled underground to create the corridor from the 710 to the 110 freeways. The tunnels would be costly and construction would still cause major disruptions to the lives of residents living above them, including the possibility of homes being seized under eminent domain. A coalition has formed to oppose this plan and promote a multi-mode, low build alternative. California’s department of transportation, known as Caltrans for short, is an integral player in any transportation project. It owns hundreds of homes in the LA area and has been called a slum-lord by its residents, some of whom are being evicted from homes that the agency can re-sell at substantial profit. Tenants facing eviction by Caltrans wonder if they are being pushed out in order to fund the 710 expansion.

Guest: Hector Torres, organizer with La Red; Judy Bergstresser, an organizer with “No 710 Action Committee”; and Don Jones, a tenant currently being evicted by Caltrans
