Indigenous Communities Sue Department of Homeland Security
| the entire program
GUEST: Margo Tamez, Co-founder of the Lipan Apache Women’s Community Defense, and Dr. Eloisa Tamez’s daughter
As part of the fallout from the Department of Homeland Security’s border wall with Mexico, communities are losing land that has belonged to them for generations. In fact, one woman, Dr. Eloisa Tamez, is suing Homeland Security. Dr. Tamez is a descendent of the Lipan Apache and Basque people who were brought into the region by the Spanish colonizers to work. Homeland Security is threatening to confiscate her land on the Texas-Mexico border, without consulting communities in the region, or assessing any environmental, cultural, or economic damage to the area as a result of the border fence and the accompanying militarization.
