MattGUEST: Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, editor of That’s Revolting! Queer Strategies for Resisting Assimilation

The California Secretary of State announced this Monday that an initiative that would once more outlaw same-sex marriage has qualified for this November’s ballot. If passed, the measure would amend the state’s constitution to “provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” It would also overturn a recent ruling by the state Supreme Court which legalized same-sex marriage in this state.

While thousands of couples are lining up to take advantage of the ruling and obtain marriage licenses, not all LGBT activists are celebrating. Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore is the editor of Nobody Passes: Rejecting the Rules of Gender and Conformity and has most recently edited, the expanded second edition of That’s Revolting! Queer Strategies for Resisting Assimilation.

Intriguing POV and well said! Often, however, reaching a destination while being part of a herd (whether we like that or not) almost always requires “detours” along the way. Gay marriage is but one of many detours we have to tolerate before we can get to that place of genuine progress… then again, sometimes those detours can be evidence of progress, even when we’d prefer that we didn’t have to make such detours in the first place. I’ll pout with you Matilda, and if we keep pushing, we’ll get this buncha sheep over the hill where there’s some real fun waiting.
