GUEST: Caryl Rivers, Professor of Journalism at Boston University
Yesterday we aired a keynote address by Maria Hinojosa at last weekend’s “Women, Action, and the Media” conference. Today we present another keynote speech, by Caryl Rivers, on Selling Anxiety: how the media plays up myths about gender. These myths include the so-called “Opt-out revolution” among educated and working American women who are supposedly leaving their jobs in droves to be stay-at-home moms. Caryl Rivers is the author of many books, including “Slick Spins and Fractured Facts: How Cultural Myths Distort the News;” “Indecent Behavior;” “She Works, He Works: How Two Income Families are Happy, Healthy and Thriving;” and her latest book, “Same Difference; How Gender Myths Are Hurting Our Relationships, Our Children and Our Jobs.” Her television drama A Matter of Principal won a Gabriel Award as one of the best television dramas of the year. Professor Rivers contributes regularly to The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Newsday, and other major U.S. newspapers. Rivers is a Professor of Journalism at Boston University.
Dear Ms. Rivers; Haven’t had the opportunity to see your show, but I slogged through your book “Slick Spins and Fractured Facts”.
This book of yours is the most egregious example of pure bigotry and purile emotional stereotyping I’ve had the misfortune to stumble across (it was in the San Francisco Main Library)!
You’d love to know that I’m a White(DEVIL) Man, but-guess what–half my family are Black folks, and I make ca. $23000.00/year, and have just helped put my daughter through college, she earned an Ms. in Community Arts Management, w/ Honors.
I was raised by a Bluestocking Feminist (my stepmom was an Equestrian Judge @ the ‘96 Olympics), and I learned by the seat of my pants from an early age, and by example later on that folks are Folks, ALL deserving of respect,especially women(!) until they violate our trust.
Wouldn’t it be profitable to rail about the Black Macho-Man Gangsta-Rap/Hip-Hop so-called “Artists” who openly HATE women, for instance? Or are they excused due to the suffering of their ancesters, who for the most part were sold into slavery by Africans–Arabs, and…yes other predatory Blacks.
I thought I was a Liberal until I read your book….
